Filene’s Basement Running of the Brides 2010

February 19, 2010 Leave a comment

If there was one word to describe this event, it would be “madness”. Women from around the area, out of the area, and even out of the state, waited outside of the Hynes Convention Center. One particular bride who was from Quincy, MA arrived at 7:30pm and slept outside overnight- she was first in line. Hopefully it turned out well for her. Others arrived at 3 am, and waited while many arrived between 5 and 6. At 8:00am Hundreds of women ran into the single room of wedding dresses, and took over the place.

Just to give an understanding as to how this works; There’s usually one bride, but she has her entourage. Some have names for their groups but most wear the same colored shirts with writing such as “Get out of the way- this dress is mine” or “The rebels” or “Team Cullen”. Once the doors open, they run in, and grab as many dresses as possible then grab a mirror and rush to a corner. The idea is to try on the dress, get an idea of what looks good, then start trading. Some trade a size 4 for a size 10, others an A-line for a mermaid, and stuff like that. It was fun to watch, but personally I’m glad I wasn’t a part of it, they can be brutal to each other. Of course there are the stragglers who didn’t have any dresses, and therefore couldn’t trade, because no one’s going to trade something for nothing. For more info, check out the Filene’s Basement website.

What a great game! BC vs. BU at the TD Banknorth Garden on February 8, 2010. Both team played hard, and with fans on all sides of the shouting and rooting for their favorite team, the players played hard and with all their strength. For the longest time it was 4-1, then BU began to make goals, but not enough for a win, and BC went home with the Beanpot Trophy. For more on the story, click here.

Justin Timberlake wins Hasty Pudding Man of the Year

J.T. came to town to receive his Hasty Pudding Man of the Year award- but not before the drag queens stomped onto the stage and had their bit of fun. In order to “bring sexy back”, JT had to feed Britney hasty pudding as she sang “gimmey gimmey more, gimmey more”. Then he had to tie a box with a bowtie around his waist in accordance with the notorious Youtube video, and last but not least, he had to prove to Lance Bass that he could bring sexy back and he did while dressed in drag. For more on what JT is up to click here, and once you enjoy that, click here for more info on the Hasty Pudding theatricals. Unfortunately I was only allowed into the Press conference.

Martha Coakley’s Run for U.S. Senate Rally

January 18, 2010 1 comment

Martha Coakley is in her final lap in the run for the U.S. Senate, and today there was a rally held at Northeastern University’s Cabot Gym. President Obama made a noteworthy appearance, and all went relatively well. Unfortunately there was a man attending who decided to cause a disruption by shouting anti-abortion statements and holding a placard stating “Jesus loves all babies”. Once that was taken care of, the rally continued, with many supporters cheering on the President and Martha Coakley. For last minute information of what you can do to help in Martha Coakley’s campaign for U.S. Senate click here.

No Pants 2010

Today the Boston Society of Spontaneity (Boston SOS) held their annual No Pants Day where random people are seen wearing only their underwear on the MBTA. It was entertaining to see all the reactions from onlookers, and to hear the replies as to why they’re not wearing their underwear. Answers ranged from some having no idea they weren’t wearing it to others stating that their luggage was lost at the airport. For  more info on what Boston SOS is, or what other interesting events they have going on, take a look at their website here.

Fire chasing in Detroit…

November 10, 2009 1 comment

I’m continuing with my blurbs/stories on Detroit, and I wanted to focus on the amount of fires that Detroit goes through on a regular basis. In many of the cases arson is one of the leading cause of the fires, then there are the problems associated with electrical wiring and space heaters. Here are a few photos I took during my two nights of fire chasing around Detroit.
