Filene’s Basement Running of the Brides 2010
If there was one word to describe this event, it would be “madness”. Women from around the area, out of the area, and even out of the state, waited outside of the Hynes Convention Center. One particular bride who was from Quincy, MA arrived at 7:30pm and slept outside overnight- she was first in line. Hopefully it turned out well for her. Others arrived at 3 am, and waited while many arrived between 5 and 6. At 8:00am Hundreds of women ran into the single room of wedding dresses, and took over the place.
Just to give an understanding as to how this works; There’s usually one bride, but she has her entourage. Some have names for their groups but most wear the same colored shirts with writing such as “Get out of the way- this dress is mine” or “The rebels” or “Team Cullen”. Once the doors open, they run in, and grab as many dresses as possible then grab a mirror and rush to a corner. The idea is to try on the dress, get an idea of what looks good, then start trading. Some trade a size 4 for a size 10, others an A-line for a mermaid, and stuff like that. It was fun to watch, but personally I’m glad I wasn’t a part of it, they can be brutal to each other. Of course there are the stragglers who didn’t have any dresses, and therefore couldn’t trade, because no one’s going to trade something for nothing.
